Gannett was founded by Frank E. Gannett and associates in 1906. It is now the largest newspaper publisher in the U.S. and a leading international news and information company. In America, the company publishes 90 daily newspapers, including USA Today, and nearly 1,000 non-daily publications. USAToday.com is one of the most popular news sites on the Web.

Its publishing operations in the United Kingdom operate under the Newsquest brand.

The company has approximately 52,600 employees. Its headquarters are in McLean, which is near Washington, D.C.

The Gannett Foundation is a corporate foundation sponsored by Gannett. The foundation's mission is to invest in the future of the communities in which Gannett does business, and in the future of journalism. In the past 12 months it has awarded almost £600,000 in the UK.

It supports projects that "take a creative approach to fundamental issues such as education and neighborhood improvement, economic development, youth development, community problem-solving, assistance to disadvantaged people, environmental conservation and cultural enrichment".
